After a long trip from Kalajoki, the week in Châlons-en-champagne started with a day trip to Paris. As the scenery from train windows changed from spring green field to modern architecture, we could sense that we were getting closer to the entrance of Paris; Gare de I’Est, one of the main stations in Paris. As we arrived at the station, we started walking through the busy streets where the lives of tourists and local people intersect. After a walk under the sunny spring sky, we found ourselves in Galerias Lafayette, a shopping mall with stunning architecture. From the rooftops, we could see through the entire city of Paris. 10 minutes from there was our lunch place, Bouillon Chartier Grands Boulevards. In a traditional French atmosphere, we enjoyed all sorts of French cuisine. With the professional service by the restaurant staff, it was a kind of experience where we were encouraged to try something new and out of our comfort zone, which always makes the travel unique and local. 

With the stomach filled, we continued our excursion in Paris, our next stop; Louvre Museum. Although the limited time we had didn’t allow us to enter the exhibition, we still enjoyed the beautiful architecture from outside. Walking along the riverside, we took ourselves to Notre-Dame. Its iconic architecture could be found from miles away, and its beauty was even clearer when we saw it nearby. As our students got used to the city, they enjoyed some free time on their own to explore the area. After that, we headed to the last destination of the day; Tour Eiffel. Blessed with good weather, we could see the very top of the tower and our students enjoyed taking photos to cross one thing off of their bucket list. It was a perfect way to conclude our excursion to Paris, and made us sure that this week in Chalon is going to be a great one.

In the morning excitement was at its peak – soon we would gather the students from the four schools together and begin our work. I must admit, not used to Southern European customs, I had anxiously googled the proper way to greet the other teachers the previous night. A kiss on the cheek seemed to be customary. Although Google was of some help, many questions were left unanswered – What was the right number of kisses? Were smooching noises mandatory or thought as a sign of bad taste? I decided to adopt an Italian air of nonchalance and go with the flow, putting my decisively Finnish needs of personal space aside for a while.
After some initial awkwardness, I felt my embarrassment fade away. What I learned is that even the Italians cannot fully agree on the number of kisses when greeting. One source told me that two kisses are expected of acquaintances and three is the norm for close friends. Someone else thought two kisses a sign of bad luck and insisted three to always be the correct number. From my own experience, I can tell you that two kisses seem to prevail, but approaching the situation with an open mind might be the best trick. Additionally, I think it's best to wait for your more experienced partner to lean in first, to find out which cheek to begin with. This way you can make sure you don't accidentally kiss your colleague or friend square on the lips - A true Finnish nightmare! 

Following a warm welcome ceremony at Liceo Scientifico Peano the students were presented with an inspiring challenge: to act as architects of an ideal future society and, in doing so, develop innovative solutions to some of Europe’s most pressing issues. The Italian teachers behind the project, Annalisa Rosati and Marzia Presti, introduced the concept of “Eutopia,” playfully describing it as a “good place to be built together.” The term itself combines the Greek prefix eu- (“good”) with topos (“place”), capturing the spirit of the initiative. 
The first stage of the project focused on brainstorming ideas to improve current systems. Mixed groups, composed of students from all four schools, exchanged perspectives. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they quickly realized how many concerns and aspirations they shared.

One key question guided their discussions: What might the ideal school of the future look like? Many groups envisioned more flexible, student-centered environments where learning by doing is valued alongside traditional subjects. Students also spoke of a need for shorter school days, less homework and more freedom of choice regarding their studies. 
As a Finn, it was surprising to realize many of the things we take for granted in Finland, such as free school lunches and longer breaks between lessons, were in fact something that the Italian students were hoping to import to their own system. On the other hand, Finnish students were eager to adopt the shorter schooldays that are common in Italy, as our lessons often end at 4 pm, whereas the Italian school finishes at 2 pm. Both the Finnish and Italian youth were united in their hope that the ban on mobile devices in their schools would be lifted - a wish perhaps not shared by the teachers present. 

Environmental sustainability was another major focus. One group suggested a forward-thinking solution to the energy crisis: New types of roads and walkways, which could harvest the mechanical energy from pedestrians or vehicles. The kinetic energy of road users would then be turned into electricity and used locally. 
The conversation also extended to leisure and entertainment. Rather than isolating individuals, students imagined experiences that foster connection. They designed a festival for young people. In the students’ vision young people would be able to attend the festival free of charge. The event would be organized according to green principles and would offer a creative platform for filmmakers, bands and artists to share their art on. 
Finally, attention turned to the future of work. Some students expressed a strong desire for a healthier balance between professional life and personal well-being. Ideas such as flexible schedules, meaningful employment, and fair wages were recurring themes. Ultimately, they envisioned a society in which individuals can contribute productively while still enjoying time for family, rest, and personal interests. 

Lähdimme Ylivieskan rautatieasemalta liikkeelle klo 19. Juna oli hieman myöhässä, mutta onneksi meillä ei ollut kiire lentokentälle, sillä lento lähti vasta 5.30. Vietimme yön lentokentällä ja lennot menivät oikein hyvin, paitsi Helsingistä lähtiessä jouduimme odottamaan noin 50 minuuttia ensin lennolta toiselle siirtyvää miehistöä ja sitten koneessa lumen ja jään poistoa. Tästä johtuen pääsimme lähtemään Riikaan myöhässä. Ehdimme onneksi jatkolennolle itse, mutta laukut jäivät Riikaan. Olimme perillä Prahassa puoli yhdeksältä sunnuntaina. Matkustimme parin tunnin matkan Prahasta Trebic-nimiseen kaupunkiin. Matkustuspäivät ovat toki rankkoja, mutta matkustaessa tulee nähtyä kaupunkeja ja liikennettä eri näkökulmasta kuin muuten. Nytkin matkustimme autolla, lentokoneella, ratikalla, metrolla ja bussilla ja seurasimme niiden tulo- ja menoaikoja esimerkiksi mobiilisovellusten kautta. Laukkujen puuttumisen takia opimme täyttämään vakuutusilmoitukset ja matkatavarailmoitukset puhelimella. 

Vaikka matkatavarat puuttuivat, ei Trebicissä enää harmittanut, sillä meidät otti vastaan ihanan iloinen opiskelijajoukko. Olimme tutustuneet jo silloin, kun tsekkiläiset olivat käymässä Kalajoella, joten oli ihanaa nähdä taas. Isäntäperheet lainasivat vaatteita ja suihkun, illallisen sekä unien jälkeen oli jo paljon parempi olo.

After a long trip to Malmö, our first full day started with getting to know the students and teachers by filling out a bingo sheet. Since schools from about ten different countries take part in this project, students had to figure out the answers to country specific questions and that prompted them to initiate a conversation with those who they are meeting for the first time. Following that, students were assigned to multiple small groups with the students from other countries, and they were given three keywords with which they had to come up with a business idea. The point was not to come up with a realistic plan, but to think outside of the box. It was very interesting to see that many groups came up with business ideas that solve social problems such as the well-being of individuals and climate change, even when they were not provided with those specific themes. It clearly showed students’ awareness to those pressing issues and their belief that business should be a means to improve the situation. 

A little stroll took us to the center of Malmö where we enjoyed our lunch. Physically and mentally fulfilled, we headed to the west part of the city where we were supposed to take part in another activity of the program. In the same teams that they worked in the morning, they were tasked to complete the rooms where they had to solve a problem. There were various problems, varying from solving a puzzle to matching the correct theme song to the specific movies. For each cleared room, the teams collected points by which they were competing with other teams. It was a great way for our students to connect with other students through completing tasks, which did not necessarily require great proficiency in English. After a long exhausting and social day, our students looked tired over the dinner but at the same time excited for what’s more to come in the coming days.

After a long trip to Brussels and well deserved rest, we started our time in Belgium with a day trip to Antwerp. Antwerp, a vibrant city with the largest population in Belgium, has historically thrived with the trade through its port. We were welcomed by the beautiful architecture of the central station, and its busy yet well composed atmosphere was something of its own. 

Walking though the busy streets of antwerp, we came across Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal; Cathedral of Our Lady, a symbolic Roman Catholic cathedral. We were lucky enough to be offered a guided tour in English, where we learnt the background stories of preserved art works and its unique architecture. Students were enticed by gorgeous decoration, which clearly shows that this cathedral has been at the center of lives in this harbour city. We proceeded to Grote Markt, which is faced by the city hall of Antwerp, as well as Het Steen, a mediaeval fortress now repurposed as a facility where visitors can learn the historical development of Antwerp. 

After lunch, some students visited M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art located western side of Antwerp. Thought provoking arts and films were exhibited with a theme of modern problems. Otherwise difficult to comprehend, but they made it possible for us to feel the existence and extent of a problem in concern as well as to initiate conversations about it. The staff at the museum was also kind enough to explain the folklore behind large random objects of hands and feet that we kept finding across the city. Attention, curiosity, and courage to talk to locals are what makes any trip worthwhile, and this was another example that proved this point. 

The last stop of the day was St. Anna’s tunnel that runs under the Scheldt River to connect two sides of the city. As impressive as it already is by being an underwater tunnel, this place is known for its wooden escalators which is one of the few remaining ones in the world. Nowadays it is rare to see the combination of aesthetics and practicality found in this escalator, which is still actively being used by the residents of Antwerp after almost 100 years since its construction. We were reminded of the importance of making something that lasts long for future generations.

Our trip to Germany started already on Saturday, because we had to wait a night at the airport for our flight. We arrived on Sunday morning, tired and exhausted but luckily we had a whole day to rest. So we started on Monday fresh and ready for the fun week.

The theme of this project was “Moving school” and the idea was to experiment with how the learning can be done better when students implement movement and exercise into the education system.

We started the day with some ice breakers and after that we got a tour of the school. Together with us there was also a group of students from Norway, so we were really a big and cheerful group. The Norwegian had very bad luck with their luggage that got lost in Norway, but luckily our trip went well compared to theirs.

How to compare the German school to ours? We feel that the schools in Germany have many many rules, what is allowed, not allowed and so on. There are many notes around the school telling students the rules. It is a very strict environment compared to our school. And they don't have a cafeteria and have to go buy their lunch from a grocery store.

In the afternoon, we went to the coolest thing ever, we went to row on a dragon boat. It is a boat where people sit next to each other and everyone is paddling on one side. In the front there is a person playing on a drum to the rhythm of the paddling that has to be synchronized. We paddled for almost 2 hours and we had lots of fun but it was also a hard workout. At the end we had a competition between the two teams…well, there was one winner and one sour loser 🙂

After that we went to spend an evening with our host families and get some rest after the day full of activities.

Aloitimme viikon Paternòsta ja sen kirjastosta. Vanhaan luostariin tehdyssä kirjastossa tapasimme muut viikkoon osallistuvat oppilaat ja henkilökunnan sekä tietysti isäntäkoulun G. B. Nicolosi - Giovanni XXIII edustajat. Saimme yleiskatsauksen Paternon kaupungista ja isäntäkoulusta.  Paikallisten ja itsemme lisäksi mukana olivat kaksi ryhmää Espanjasta - eteläinen Algeciras sekä pohjoisen Burgos. Jo yhden hyvin nukutun yön jälkeen oppilaillemme oli alkanut muodostua selkeä ajatus koto Suomen ja Italian maantieteellisistä sekä kulttuurillisista eroista. Kirjastosta suuntasimme historialliselle kukkulalle ja pääsimme tutustumaan Rocca Nomannaan, joka on viikinkien 1000 -luvulla rakentama linnoitus hyökkääjiä vastaan.  Kukkulalle meidät johdatti 85 askelmainen upea kiviportaikko. Oppaamme yksityiskohtaiset ja perusteelliset kertomukset olivat omiaan luomaan kattavan käsityksen paikallisesta historiasta. Kuulimme kertomuksia linnoituksen eri vaiheista eri hallitsijoiden kautta nykypäivään. Kierroksen jälkeen oppilaat jatkoivat päiväänsä omien oppilastovereidensa  ja opettajat kollegoidensa kanssa.

Viettäisimme viikon Duro Esterin koulussa yhdessä italialaisten ja slovakialaisten oppilasryhmien kanssa. Isäntäkoulumme oli n. 400 oppilaan peruskoulu, jossa on oppilaita ensimmäisestä luokasta kahdeksanteen luokkaan. Isäntäoppilaat olivat samanikäisiä kuin meidän oppilaamme, eli 13-14-vuotiaita. Luvassa oli kiinnostava ohjelma lukuisine työpajoineen sekä retkineen.

We left Kalajoki bright and early on Sunday morning to catch the 7.38 train to Helsinki. The train ride went well and the students were excited about our upcoming trip. In Helsinki we took a tram to the harbour, which was a first tram ride for a couple of our students. The ferry ride was also a first for a few students. The sea was calm and the sun was shining and the students had a good time. In Tallinn we caught the Flixbus to Riga. At that point most of us were pretty tired, but still in good spirits. The bus ride took about five hours and we arrived at rainy Riga right around midnight. Thankfully all of the families and one of the teachers were meeting us there and took us safely to our accommodations.

After a long travel day, it was not easy to wake up early morning, but we were all excited about the day ahead of us and also, it was spring weather in Bratislava and so waking up was easier.

The school where we spent the whole week was a German School in Bratislava. First, we did not know what that means, but then we learned that these are German schools around the whole world that are funded partially by the German government and students have to pay a fee for attending them. This made us even more curious about the whole school.

The whole Monday was full of activities. We started with ice breaker games to get to know each other. Together with us, there were also Slovaks, Croatian and Ukrainian students. 

After the games followed a very official welcome, where we listened to some speeches from important people at the school.

And then we started working.

Our first task was to create a digital page for a booklet about fake news and how to tell if some news is fake or real. This was supported by a workshop on fake news and misinformation. We for sure learned a lot and are confident that now we can better distinguish between real and fake.

Because there is a lot of sitting during our days, the hosts prepared for us also daily yoga sessions, where we spent 10-15 minutes either stretching or meditating to support our wellbeing.

After a very good lunch, we started working on the main part of the project, which was either a graffiti wall, or a musical based on Finnish, Slovak and Croatian songs.

Today’s task was to brainstorm some ideas about what it is we want to do.

After that, we finally got to go home to our families and spend time with our new friends. We went to play laser tag and go shopping and it was a great end of the first day.

Erasmus+-matkamme Saksaan alkoi aikaisin sunnuntaiaamuna 30.11., kun kokoonnuimme Kokkolan rautatieasemalle klo 7.00. Vaikka uni olisi maistunut vielä pitkään, matkajännitys piti kaikki hereillä ja hyvällä tuulella. Astuimme junaan ja aloimme suunnata kohti Tikkurilaa. Tikkurilassa tankkasimme vatsamme täyteen ja jatkoimme matkaa lähijunalla kohti Helsinki-Vantaan lentokenttää. Lentokentällä edessä oli noin neljän tunnin odottelu, jonka täytimme kiertelemässä kaupoissa. Lentomme oli hieman myöhässä, joten lopulta pääsimme koneeseen noin tunnin alkuperäistä aikataulua jäljessä. Lento sujui rauhallisesti, ja laskeuduimme Amsterdamiin paikallista aikaa noin klo 19.30. Päivän matkustaminen tuntui jo jaloissa ja silmissä, mutta jaksoimme vielä suunnata junalla kohti hotellia. Kun lopulta pääsimme perille, kävimme koko porukan voimin ostamassa iltapalaa. Nukahdimme nopeasti – takana oli pitkä päivä, ja edessä vielä jännittävämpi. Odotamme innolla huomista, sillä Saksan opiskelijat liittyvät seuraamme Amsterdamiin yhteisen päivän ajaksi. Luvassa on varmasti uusia tuttavuuksia, paljon nähtävää ja ikimuistoisia hetkiä.

Tapasimme Erasmus+ porukan kanssa Kokkolan juna-asemalla klo 15.00 jännittyneissä, mutta innokkaissa reissutunnelmissa. Edessä oli odotettu matka Tsekkiin. Junamatka eteni leppoisasti ja saavuimmekin Tikkurilan asemalle juuri suunnitellusti klo 19.20. Tästä suuntasimme taksilla Forenom Hostel Aviapolikseen, joka toimi meidän yhden yön majapaikkanamme. Hostelli tarjosi meille pienen annoksen reppureissufiilistä — yhteiset vessat ja suihkut toivat oman säväyksensä kokemukseen. Olimme kuitenkin todella tyytyväisiä siihen, että saimme viettää yön sisätiloissa, emmekä lentokentän penkeillä. Illalla, matkalaukut valmiina ja herätyskellot asetettuina, painuimme aikaisin nukkumaan. Edessä odotti aikainen aamu.

Herätyskellot soivat varhain, jo klo 5.00, ja edessä oli matkustuspäivä kohti Tšekin Prahaa. Tilaamamme taksi saapui klo 6.00 hakemaan meitä lentokentälle. Kaikki sujui lentokentällä hyvin,  kone oli aikataulussa, ja pääsimme jopa hieman etuajassa ilmaan. Lento sujui mallikkaasti, ja ennen kuin huomasimmekaan, olimme jo Prahassa. Lentokentältä matka jatkui bussilla kohti Prahan keskustaa, jossa kävimme lounaalle ennen viimeistä etappia, junamatka kohti Hradec Královéa. Junamatka meni nopeasti, ja  saavuimme klo 14.00 perille Hradec Královéen. Vastassa olivat isäntäperheet, jotka ottivat oppilaat lämpimästi vastaan. Yhteiskuvan jälkeen jokainen oppilas lähti oman isäntäperheen kanssa viettämään sunnuntai-iltaa ja tutustumaan uusiin ympäristöihin.

Saavuimme keväiseen Nitraan sunnuntaina 11.5.2025. Hyvin nukutun yön jälkeen viikko alkoi vauhdikkaasti, kun suuntasimme pienelle vaellusretkelle läheisen Zobor-vuoren rinteille. Nitra on Slovakian viidenneksi suurin kaupunki ja se levittäytyy seitsemälle kukkulalle, joista Zobor on korkein. 

Kevyt aamulenkki paljastui noin 10 kilometrin vaellukseksi vaihtelevassa maastossa. Matkan varrella ihastelimme vihreää luontoa ja rinteen hedelmä- ja viinitarhoja. Saavuimme yhdelle Slovakian vanhimmista kirkoista, Drazovky kostolikin kirkolle 1000-luvulta. Kirkon luota avautui hienot näkymät Nitraa ympäröiviin laaksoihin sekä viime vuosina laajalle levinneelle teollisuusalueelle autotehtaineen.

Hengityksen tasaannuttua söimme lounasta Nitran keskuspuistossa, grillaten makkaraa ja vaahtokarkkeja. Seuraavaksi oli aika nostaa jälleen sykettä: vuorossa oli kovatahtinen maaottelu lasersodan merkeissä. Ensimmäisen ottelun vei vierasjoukkue, hyvä Suomi! Näiden uurastusten jälkeen uni maistui varmasti jokaiselle.

Six 6th graders and two teachers from Merenojan yhtenäiskoulu in Kalajoki started their Erasmus+ -journey to Germany early on Sunday the 11th May.  We met each other  in Kokkola train station and  waited about 20 minutes for the train that was delayed. The students said goodbyes to their families and the journey began. We had to change to a bus in Seinäjoki because of some railway yard work.  It took about  three hours  to Tampere where we had to change to a train again. Finally we arrived in Helsinki. 

The first flight was from Helsinki to Amsterdam was only about two and half hours. When we arrived in Amsterdam we headed straight to our gate. The flight from Amsterdam to Stuttgart was one hour late. We waited for a long time until the plane finally took off. The flight itself lasted only 50 minutes. After landing we headed to get our luggage. One student’s suitcase was missing so we had to do the tracing. 

Finally after a taxi ride we reached our final destination in Königsbach after midnight. The hosts picked up the students and the teachers continued by taxi to Karlsruhe.

Ensimmäiseen päivään on mahtunut paljon mukavia asioita: ensinnäkin Duisburg otti meidät lämmöllä vastaan, +25. Ja saksalainen vieraanvaraisuus näytti osaamistaan, kun Noel nouti meidät opettajat Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz-Gesamtschschule -nimiselle koululle Teslallaan. Koululla tapasimme kuusi oppilastamme ja kuulimme, että kaikkien hostit ovat vähintäänkin hyvällä tasolla. Ja me kaikki olimme nukkuneet yön hyvin, vaikka edellisyön olimme viettäneet Helsingin lentokentällä. 

Rehtori oli sairastunut, joten koulun Erasmus-yhdyshenkilö, Yvonne, perehdytti meidät saksalaiseen koulujärjestelmään, joka on monenkirjava osavaltiosta riippuen. Koulussa on luokat 5-13 oppilasmäärän ollessa noin 1600 (ikähaitari 10-19v). 1100 oppilaalla on ulkomaalaistausta, joista suurimmalla osalla on turkkilaisjuuret. Opettajia heillä on noin 150. Perehdytyksen jälkeen tutustuimme koulurakennukseen piha-alueineen. Sitten oppilaat pääsivät ryhmäytymään erilaisten liikunnallisten viitepelien parissa, joita me opettajat seurasimme. 

Kotonakäymisen jälkeen menimme yhdessä keilaamaan tsekkiläisen, espanjalaisten ja saksalaisten kanssa. Ja näin matka jatkuu kohti huomista.

Maanantaiaamuna kävelimme raikkaassa kevätsäässä italialaisen aamupalan jälkeen koulun pihaan, jonka  pelikentillä oli jo täysi tohina menossa. Kyse oli koulun urheilukilpailuista. Koulun ala-aulassa meidät toivottivat tervetulleiksi ystävällinen tutoropettajamme Lorena ja koulun Erasmus-vaihdoista kertovat näyttelytelineet, joiden joukosta tunnistimme välittömästi kuvat omasta koulustamme. Kuvat ja tekstit vaihtojen kokemuksista pitävät hienosti koko koulun väen tietoisina tuoreimmista kansainvälisistä vaihdoista. Erasmus-materiaalien lisäksi perinteiseen koulurakennukseen oli saatu viihtyisyyttä esillä olevan taiteen, maalattujen seinien ja toisen kerroksen aulaan rakennetun viihtyisän kirjastonurkkauksen avulla. Kirjastonurkkaus toimi myös opiskelijoiden hiljaisen työskentelyn tilana.

Ennen päivän ensimmäisiä oppitunteja vaihdoimme tervehdyksiä ja ajatuksia viikon kulusta tutoropettaja Lorenan ja koulun apulaisrehtorin sekä rehtorin kanssa. Saimme kokonaiskuvan viikon ohjelmasta, italialaisen koulutussysteemin rakenteesta ja tutustumiskohteemme eli teknisen lukion erityispiirteistä.  Pidimme hyvånä ratkaisuna sitä, että lukioikäisten opiskelijoiden on mahdollista valita, lähtevätkö he opiskelemaan perinteiseen teoreettiseen lukioon, perinteiseen ammattikouluun vai lukioon, jossa opiskellaan teoria-aineita, mutta jossa on mahdollisuus samalla opiskella myös valitsemansa alan käytännön opintoja.

Suuren koulun käytävät olivat hämmästyttävän rauhallisia. Ensin ihmettelimme, miten tämä oli mahdollista 700 opiskelijan ja kymmenien opettajien koulussa. Viikon kuluessa asia ratkesi: Sama opetusryhmä pysyi pääasiassa koko koulupäivän ajan samassa opetustilassa ja opettajat siirtyivät tilasta toiseen lyhyiden siirtymävälituntien aikana. Opiskelijat vaihtoivat luokkaa vain siirtyessään niin sanottuihin laboratorioihin, esimerkiksi tietokoneluokkaan, johon oli rakennettu lento- ja lennonjohtosimulaattorit.

Käytävillä ja luokissa oli paljon muutakin henkilökuntaa  kuin vain opettajia. Käyvävillä oli valvojat rauhoittamassa liikkumista ja valvomassa, että vessoissa ei esimerkiksi tupakoitu. Myös luokissa oli erityiset valvojat sinä aikana, kun opettajat vaihtoivat luokkia. Oppilaat kävivät vessassa ja välipala-automaatilla lähinnä oppituntien aikana ja valvotusti. Hämmästelimme sitä, miten motivoituneilta ja hereillä olevilta opiskelijat vaikuttivat, vaikka he eivät juuri liikkuneet päivän aikana eikä heillä ollut myöskään mahdollisuutta oikeaan kouluruokailuun.

Koulupäivän jälkeen teimme kokonaiskatsauksen Materan vanhaankaupunkiin eli Sassiin. Kävelimme ja ihastelimme rakennuksia sekä ympäröivään luontoon avautuvia maisemia. Kaupunki oli henkeäsalpaavan kaunis. Sassin historiaan ja vanhankaupungin pelastusoperaatioon tutustuimme vielä aiheesta tehdyn valaisevan videon avulla. Luolatalojen arki ja alueen ainutlaatuisuus alkoivat valjeta meille.

Sunnuntai oli matkustuspäivä. Lähdimme aamulla koululta kohti Kokkolaa, josta lähdimme junalla Helsinkiin. Lensimme ensin Amsterdamiin, josta oli jatkolento Lissaboniin. Matka sujui hyvin ja illalla saavuimme paikallisjunamatkan jälkeen Entroncamentoon. Siellä meitä oli vastassa tuttuja kasvoja. Isäntäperheet ottivat ystävällisesti vastaan meidän oppilaat. Pitkän matkustuspäivän jälkeen oli hyvä käydä nukkumaan ja odottamaan mielenkiinnolla tulevaa viikkoa. 

Maanantai 7.4.

Odotimme kovasti ensimmäistä päivää Portugalissa. Heräsimme hieman kosteaan ja pilviseen aamuun. Koululla meitä odotti ystävälliset ihmiset ja koimme olevamme erittäin tervetulleita. Aloitimme yhteisesti tutustumalla toisiimme lisää sekä teimme pienen icebreaker-pelin. Koulun rehtori esittäytyi ja kertoi koulusta hieman tarkemmin. Hän ei puhunut lainkaan englantia mutta se ei estänyt häntä keskustelemasta meidän kanssa. Tarvittaessa hän sai tulkkausapua. Tarjolla oli kaikenlaisia herkkuja, hedelmiä ja leivonnaisia. Tuorepuristettu appelsiinimehu oli todella maukasta! Mahat täynnä kävimme koulukierroksen vanhempien oppilaan johdattamana.

Koulu on aika uusi mutta äänieristystä ei ollut lainkaan, joten äänien voimakkuus yllätti kovasti. Kierroksen jälkeen meille tarjottiin koululounaaksi kanariisivuokaa sekä kasvissosekeittoa. Paikalliset oppilaat maksavat koululounaastaan 1,50 € päivässä. Vaihtoehtoisesti heillä voi olla omat eväät mukana. Tämän jälkeen olikin pitkä tauko, jolloin osa oppilaista kävi kotona tai olivat koululla viettämässä taukoa. Tauon jälkeen tutustuimme tiedepainotteiseen kouluun 4-10 vuotiaille. Koulussa oli kaikkiaan 300 oppilasta. Ilmiöpohjainen oppiminen korostautui todella hyvin tässä koulussa.

After a long travel the previous day, we were still a bit tired when the day started, but seeing the spring weather and the italian energy did give us strength for the day.

The welcome at the school was very nice, we got a performance from the school band and many greetings from headmistress and video principal.

After that, we did get to know what will be the main theme of the project. We were to create an escape room using the digital platform “Genially” with the theme of “How to become an European citizen”.

After the introduction, we were invited to a real italian food fest. We have never seen so much food in our life. Italians really did stand up by the stereotype of being a little bit crazy about food. There was pizza, pasta of all kinds, we even found a sweet pizza with Nutella - that was a little crazy for us. But everything was delicious, our favorite were meatballs with lemon sauce.

After eating, we played some ice breakers to get to know each other better. Except us and the italians, there were also students from Cyprus, so we had a chance to make new friends this week.

The Italian school system is very different from ours. They have very short days, usually they get to go home around 13:00. But they told us that many of them have huge amount of homework that will take them late in the afternoon to finish. So much of the study is based on the self-study. And many schools have school day also on Saturday.

Their classes are very different as well. They talk all the time and it is very hard for the teacher to keep the students on point. We were wondering how they learn anything, but somehow it seems to work. At some subjects, like math or chemistry, they were much ahead of what we study at our lukio.

After school was over, we walked around the Monterotondo city, had some coffee and ölater went to one of the family and we all made pasta.

We feel here like at home, everyone is very nice and we are becoming good friends with our partners. And we are of course excited about tomorrow, because we will get to go to Rome.

On our first day in Chalon en Champagne, we were warmly welcomed by French teachers and students. The morning session started with warm coffee and French pastries, that precedes a lot of delicious food we are going to have this week. Filling our stomach, the theme of the project work; youth well-being, was explained by a school nurse. The project is to create a short video that promotes the well-being of young people with scenes filmed throughout this week. Students were tasked with planning, filming, and editing of their own video. These videos will be published on the school’s website to further influence people in a positive manner, capitalizing on the strength of digital media. 

In the afternoon, students participated in the lessons of their hosting student where they experienced a different atmosphere and teaching styles in France. Meanwhile, teachers observed a catering lesson as well as an engineering and computing lesson, which makes this school unique in the region. Aspiring French students with a clear idea for their future occupation seemed to be devoted to their studying and practice, which reminded us of the importance of finding a connection between what students are learning and what they will be doing in their future. Moreover, in the lessons of engineering and computing, students were skillfully utilizing the computer programs to actualize their ideas. This provided a great example of bringing in the digital technologies and tools to classrooms. 

Maanantai alkoi klo 8 aamulla, kun kaikkien maiden (Tsekki, Espanja, Saksa ja Suomi) edustajat kokoontuivat juhlasaliin kuuntelemaan tervetulotoivotusta Katolické gymnázium -kouluun. Juhlallisuuksien jälkeen olivat vuorossa opastetut kierrokset. Isäntäoppilaat johtivat kukin ryhmänsä läpi koulun, joka koostui kahden eri aikakauden osista. Opettajat kiersivät omana ryhmänään. Opimme mm. koululla olevan käytössä meidän Wilmaamme tavallaan muistuttavan järjestelmän, mutta heidän järjestelmänsä kertoi myös reaaliaikaisesti kuka oppilaista on saapunut kouluun tai poistunut sieltä, sillä jokaisen oppilaan on kuljettava omalla tunnisteellaan portista. Koulusta löytyy myös lemmikkiosasto pupuineen, marsuineen jne. Jokainen ryhmä huolehtii vuoroviikoin eläinten hoidosta. 

Kun kierrokset oli käyty, pitivät isäntäoppilaat meille vieraille kattavan tietoiskun koulustaan, alueestaan sekä koko maasta. Nyt jokainen meistä vieraista tietää huomattavasti enemmän Tsekistä ja sen kulttuurista. Oppilaat saivat myös ohjeistuksen viikon lopussa koottavien videoiden tekoon. Opettajien siirtyessä nauttimaan talon tarjoamia virvokkeita rehtorin seuraan jäivät oppilaat tutustumaan toisiinsa paremmin icebreaker-leikkien myötä. 

Puolilta päivin oli lounaan vuoro. Toisin kuin meillä Merenojan yhtenäiskoululla, koululla ei ole lainkaan omaa ruokalaa. Lounaalle siirryttiin joitain satoja metrejä kävellen. Lounaspaikka ei myöskään ollut tarkoitettu ainoastaan oppilaille, vaan sitä hyödynsivät myös muut kuten kaupungin virkamiehet ja esim. poliisit. Koululounas ei ollut oppilaille maksuton, vaan osalla oli eväät, osa maksoi lounaasta. Meille vieraille lounas oli isäntiemme tarjoama.

Lounaan jälkeen jakauduimme kahteen ryhmään. Puolet lähtivät tutustumaan kaupungin keskustaan ja kuuluisaan juutalaiskortteliin, joka kuuluu Unescon maailmaperintökohteisiin. Toinen puoli puolestaan vieraili ensin kansankulttuurin keskuksessa. Molemmat vierailukohteet hienoja ja täynnä tarinoita menneiltä ajoilta.
