The mayor is assisted in the management of the city by the city’s management team. The management team develops and coordinates the preparation, development, communication and joint activities that are carried out across the municipal organisation.

The management team prepares matters pertaining to the entire municipality for the decision-making process and is in charge of the implementation of internal communication and joint activities. The management team also promotes development activities in different areas of operations and seeks to direct the organisation’s operations with the well-being of the municipality and its residents as the goal.

The management team primarily convenes twice a month. Financial matters are discussed at meetings on a regular basis. The management team’s meeting agenda also often includes matters pertaining to human resources, municipal services and monitoring and anticipation of the operational environment. In addition to other current matters, the management team’s agenda also includes matters pertaining to industries, well-being, ownership steering, development of the organisation and cooperation with neighbouring municipalities.

The city’s management team is appointed by the mayor. The management team does not hold a position established by legislation. The city also has other management teams, such as the contingency management team and industry-specific management teams.

Mayor

The mayor leads the municipality’s administration, financial management and other operations under the authority of the City Board. The annual priorities and goals of the work are drawn from the municipal strategy, budget guidelines and the current prospects of the municipal sector. The reform goals set out in the government policy statement also affect the mayor’s work during the planning period.

Jukka Puoskari, Master of Laws trained on the bench, has served as the mayor of Kalajoki since 2000. Jukka was born in March 1962. His previous work history includes working as the city secretary at Lapua and, prior to coming to Kalajoki, the municipal manager of the municipality of Puolanka.

The mayor has been a member of the Ylivieska Sub-regional Board since 2000. He served as the chairperson for two of these years. His other positions of trust include being a member of the board of directors of the Educational Municipal Federation of the Kalajokilaakso Region and the Transport Committee of the Oulu Chamber of Commerce.

In his free time, Jukka enjoys various forms of physical activities: skiing and rinkball in the winter and football and roller skating in the summer. Travelling and various cultural events are also close to the mayor’s heart.
