The role of the environmental protection authority is to monitor and promote environmental protection in the municipality. The aim is to ensure that the residents of Kalajoki have a comfortable and healthy living environment.

The environmental protection authority of Kalajoki is the Environmental Committee, which has delegated some of its authority to office-holders. The city’s environmental control-related duties include processing and monitoring environmental and soil permits, processing cross-country and waterway permits, processing notifications under the Environmental Protection Act, and carrying out monitoring in accordance with the Outdoor Recreation Act and the Chemicals Act. The city also contributes to environmental monitoring and takes part in the processing of matters related to environmental protection.
